GoPensacola.com's Back-to-School Party Guide!

GoPensacola.com staff • August 19, 2010

With classes beginning Monday at two of Pensacola's largest institutions of higher learning — the University of West Florida and Pensacola State College — the GoPensacola crew would like to take a moment to welcome all new students and to say welcome back to all the returning students.Starting — or returning to — classes can be a stressful thing, and while your studies should come first, everybody needs to take time to blow off steam. Pensacola's party scene offers you plenty of opportunities, with many clubs having regular "college nights" and/or offering special "back-to-school" parties this week. We've got your party guide, and a word of caution: While college allows for a lot of new freedoms, it doesn't allow for underage drinking. If you're younger than 21, please don't try to purchase alcohol from any of these establishments. You're only making yourself look bad — and running the risk of getting thrown out. Don't be that guy.And if you are of age to imbibe, please do so responsibly. Know your limits and have a designated driver; barring that, call a cab.

Back-to-school celebrations

• Seville Quarter, 130 E. Government St. in downtown Pensacola, will have its annual Back to School Toga Party on Thursday. Kick off the school year dressed in anything from a simple toga to something more elaborate, such as a Roman slave, or a figure of Greek mythology. Anyone in costume or toga will get free admission, and if old enough to drink, will also get their first beer free. Among the entertainment, expect live music from Timberhawk, dance music with DJ D-Mixx, the Dueling Piano show and karaoke with Krazy George.• Cabana Nightclub, 7164 N. Ninth Ave., presents its annual Back to School Bash sponsored by the ATO fraternity on Thursday. There is no cover charge and the party will feature drink specials and hundreds of dollars in prize giveaways.• Capt'n Fun Beach Club, 400 Quietwater Beach Road on Pensacola Beach, is headed back in time for "Hot Fun Time Machine," a blowout '80s back-to-school bash on Aug. 27. Doors will open at 8 p.m., and the party will feature an '80s costume contest, go-go dancers, a wet T-shirt contest, an '80s video dance party with DJ Tony C, free beer from 9 to 11 p.m. and "Ice a Bro" in the Sky Bar. Ladies ages 21 and older dressed in '80s gear get in free. For everyone else, the cover charge is $5 for ages 21 and older and $10 for ages 18 to 20.• O'Riley's Irish Pub, 3728 Creighton Road, will celebrate the resumption of classes with a back-to-school bash featuring 25-cent draft beer starting at 10 p.m. Aug. 28.

College or 'all-ages' nights

• Capt'n Fun Beach Club's regular College Nights are Friday and Saturday nights, with ages 18 and up admitted. Cover charge varies based on entertainment. Friday nights usually feature a video dance party with DJ Tony C. Saturday nights usually feature live bands along with DJ Tony C.• O'Riley's Irish Pub admits ladies 18 and older and guys 21 and older all year long. College nights are Tuesdays, which feature free drinks for ladies from 9 to 11 p.m. along with Wii and flip cup tournaments; Wednesdays, with $1 well drinks and bottles from 8 to 11 p.m. along with beer pong and bean bag toss tournaments; and Thursdays, with $3 Bud Light pitchers from 8 to 11 p.m. and karaoke with the Gulf Coast Party Crew.• Mugs & Jugs, 12080 Scenic Highway, is actually the closest bar or nightclub to UWF, just outside the back entrance. Like O'Riley's (with which it shares owners), admission is open to ladies 18 and older and guys 21 and older all year long. College nights are Tuesdays, with $1 bottles and well drinks from 8 to 11 p.m. and beer pong; Fridays, with $3 top shelf martinis all night; and Saturdays, with $3 Bud Light pitchers from 8 to 11 p.m.• The Fish House Deck Bar, 600 S. Barracks St., is one of the hottest places to be on a Wednesday night. While Wednesdays are not strictly a "college night," Girls' Night Out on the deck is one of the area's most popular parties, and it is open to all ages. Ladies who are old enough to drink enjoy $2 drinks all night long, and the evening features a variety of live and DJ/dance music. More importantly, it's one of Pensacola's hottest places to see and be seen, as the cheap drinks attract the area's hottest ladies, and the ladies attract the area's hottest guys. If you can't hook up here, we're guessing that finding study time isn't going to be a challenge for you. Also, for those old enough to drink, the Fish House's daily happy hour is called "The Big Mix from 4 to 6," and offers 2-for-1 drinks at all bars on the property.• Cabana Nightclub, which bills itself at "the original college bar," has its regular College Night on Wednesdays, with no cover, $2 well drinks and longnecks, and music from Video DJ Tony C.• Emerald City, 406 E. Wright St. in downtown Pensacola, has a "Drink & Drown"/college night on Wednesdays. Doors open at 9 p.m. and ages 18 and older are welcome with a $10 cover charge. That also gets you free well drinks and draft beer from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. if you're of-age, and free bottled water, juices and sodas if you're under age. Drag shows take place at 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m., and the party doesn't stop until 3 a.m. You don't have an early class on Thursday, right?• Chan's Nightclub, 610 E. Nine Mile Road, celebrates college night on Wednesdays. For ages 21 and older, admission for "Drinkin' With Lincoln" night, which includes free well drinks all night long. Ages 18 to 20 are admitted for a $10 cover charge, sans the booze. Also, Chan's is running a back-to-school special through September: $3.75 Jose Cuervo shots with college ID.• Wednesday is also college night at Ragtyme Grille, 201 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola. Starting at 3 p.m., enjoy $3 margaritas; $2 wine, well drinks and longnecks; and half-price nachos and fish tacos with college ID.• Without a doubt, the week's biggest college night is Thursday nights at Seville Quarter. Known affectionately to the locals as "kids & squids night" — though the owners stress that there's plenty for everyone, not just the under-21 set — admission is open to ages 18 and older, with a $5 cover charge if you're old enough to drink, and $10 if you're not. Seville Quarter is a massive entertainment complex with 7 rooms of entertainment, but the biggest Thursday-night crowds will be in Phineas Phogg's, which featyres a huge DJ dance party, and Rosie O'Grady's, home of the raucous singalong Dueling Pianos show. A variety of DJs and live bands play throughout the rest of the complex, and don't forget about karaoke with Krazy George in Lili Marlene's. Standing drink specials include $3 pitchers until 11 p.m. and $5 pitchers after 11 p.m. And Seville is continuing its summer College Night Cookouts, private parties open to college students only from 7 to 10 p.m. at the End O' the Alley. Cover for the cookout is free with college ID, and the party features DJ music, cookout food with all items at $5 or less, $3 Yuengling pitchers, $2 Three Olives vodka specials, $2 Jello shots and beer pong.• Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen & Taproom, 10 Palafox Place in downtown Pensacola, is open to all ages all year long with no cover.
