PLAYING AT 4:15 P.M. SATURDAY, OCT. 15 ON THE GULF WINDS JAZZ & HERITAGE STAGE
Dedicated soul singer Bettye LaVette has been performing for more than four decades, and is finally receiving her long overdue recognition. She is now being called “The Great Lady of Soul,” and for good reason.
LaVette's first album, “My Man – He’s a Lovin’ Man,” came out in 1962, when she was just 16. She has been performing ever since.
In December 2008, millions saw her perform at the Kennedy Center Honors, where she performed a cover of The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me.”
With a little determination and a whole lot of talent and spunk, LaVette is finally receiving her due. At the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, she was nominated for the Best Contemporary Blues Album award for “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook.”
