When was the last time you went to work and a lady demanded that you take your shirt off?

Welcome to the world of David Shaw as he punches the clock on a Pensacola stage.

The frontman for The Revivalists is familiar with crowds turned on by the group's gritty, New Orleans rock 'n' roll sizzle, but one local fan is very demanding.

Whether it's DeLuna Festival or tonight's CD release show at Vinyl Music Hall, 2 Palafox Place, a wild ride with wild people is expected.

"We love playing in Pensacola," Shaw said. "It's right up there with our favorite place to play besides New Orleans. The people, the response we've gotten from them. It's amazing!"

This year carries the band from SXSW through nonstop tour dates including tonight's concert and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April.

"That's what we do, stay on the road," Shaw said. "Keep rolling. When you stop moving, you grow old, and we haven't stopped moving for three years."

Their new CD, "City of Sound," mirrors their concert experience courtesy of producer and Galactic saxophonist, Ben Ellman, who Shaw credits as a mentor.

"We really tried to capture the live energy," he said.

When mentioning the audience member who commands shirtless Pensacola concerts, Shaw laughs.

"Oh yeah, I think I know who you're talking about," he said. "It gets really hot. If taking the shirt off is going to cool me down, it's what I got to do. It didn't start out as some macho thing like, 'I wanna take my shirt off for the ladies.' I was doing that before I had any kind of muscles. It was strictly a hot thing. I'm hot; I got to take my shirt off."

Soundgarden flashback

Continuing last week's retrospective on the early '90s Soundgarden show at the Nite Owl, longtime residents Tim Dohms and Boyd Knox detailed a ceiling-climbing, guitar-smashing Chris Cornell and a riotous crowd that equaled one of their wildest Pensacola shows.

"Soundgarden was on tour with Guns N' Roses at the time," Knox said. "They had a break in the tour. Woodenhorse (a legendary local group) opened for them."

As the concert rolled into the parking lot, Dohms ran into a friend hiding a souvenir.

"He looked left and right," Dohms said. "And he was like, 'Dude, I got Chris Cornell's wah pedal!' And took off to his car."

"Needless to say, Soundgarden hasn't been back since, I don't think," Knox added.

Some interesting information about the show has surfaced, but several questions remain. What happened to the shattered Les Paul? What did Soundgarden do in their dressing room as hell broke loose? Will Chris Cornell ever play Pensacola again?
