More

Happy birthday, Vinyl Music Hall! The popular downtown venue opened its doors at 2 Palafox Place on Aug. 28, 2010. Growing up in Pensacola, I always dreamed about a place like Vinyl; a place where local artists could perform on the same stage as Grammy Award winners and touring musicians on the rise. It’s been a wild and exciting two years, and I’m looking forward to even more amazing shows and events in the future.

'80s Prom at Vinyl

Dust off the flux capacitor and go back in time during the ’80s Prom at Vinyl. Expect lots of live ’80s music, but don’t expect Deadly Fists of Kung Fu frontman Zac Hobbs to dress up.

“In my old age, I’ve become too fat, and I’m afraid that I’ll bear too much resemblance to Robert Smith” said the never-too-serious Hobbs, whose band will perform as The Exploding Boys, a tribute to The Cure, tonight.

If you missed DFKF’s performance last year as opening act for Modern English, you missed a revved-up set that pleased purist fans of the ’80s alternative group as well as the most diehard rock fans.

Superhero also will perform, and DJ Delorean will spin music throughout the night. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for this 18-and-older event. For details, visit www.vinylmusichall.com

Back to School Show

On Sunday, ring in the school year with art and music during the Back to School Show at Sluggo’s Vegetarian Restaurant, 101 S. Jefferson St. Featuring the music of Baton Rouge group Twin Killers, New Orleans rock outfit Sun Hotel and local group Ritual, the show also includes artwork by local artists.

“We want people to feel like they have a place to express themselves,” said University of West Florida anthropology major and Ritual guitarist Jean Carlos, who helped organize the event, “And to put out the art that they love, the music that they love and can come together and appreciate that together, regardless of who you are or where you’re coming from.”

The show starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $6 For details, visit www.sluggos.net.
