Otep Shamaya promised one thing for everyone who watches her band OTEP on Sunday at Vinyl Music Hall, 2 Palafox Place: “A complete and total mutiny of the senses.”

From a platform of crushing metal, OTEP’s music and live shows are powered by Shamaya’s passion for the arts and her compassion for people.

“Through music, art, and activism, I’ve been able to connect to a very large nation of people that globally have the same intention,” said Shamaya, who created the Los Angeles metal group in 2000 as one of many outlets for her art and beliefs.

As an artist whose disciplines include poetry, painting and acting, Shamaya’s work may seem overwhelming, but she explained how to keep it all in perspective.

“There are times I need to devote more of my energy to music and there’s times when I need to devote more of my energy to activism, but I don’t mind that it takes too much of my day,” Shamaya said. “What else is there? It takes maybe 1 percent more energy to care about something than it (does) to ignore it.”

Shamaya also uses her work to inspire those who share her struggle.

“(If) I could help someone like me, I would, and so growing up in this world of poverty and violence in the house, I didn’t want anybody else to grow up to feel the way that I felt,” she said. “I really put my mind to it, that if I was ever in a position where I could help somebody like me, I would.”

OTEP’s prevailing themes of empowerment and justice are not limited to sex or race. Shamaya says, “Music is universal. I don’t think that it’s genderized, and I appreciate that I’m able to reach all people.”
